Education Report - Specifier: March 2016

As a representative of CSC (in continuing our relationship with BCIT), I once again attended the Industry Student Career Mixer for the Architectural and Building Technology Students at BCIT last Wednesday evening, February 3rd, promoting the benefits of being a member of our Vancouver Chapter and the possible enrollment in the courses offered in continuing education for both writing and reading specifications associated with the Construction Industry. At that time, I also confirmed with BCIT’s main ABT instructor, Antonio Sanjuan, that, once again, I will be representing CSC while lecturing to his class on the Importance of Specifications for his 2nd Year course curriculum this Spring.

Respectfully submitted,
Glenn Chatten

Education Report - Specifier: October 2015

The Principles of Construction Documentation (PCD) is scheduled to begin October 19th and there is still time to register. Feedback from previous students is the classroom learning environment is the best way to help learn and better understand the subject matter. The PCD is the first course, and a prerequisite, for all of the CSC education streams. These are Certified Technical Representative, Certified Construction Contract Administrator, and Certified Specification Practitioner. It is also a strong foundational course for people who are new to the construction industry or want to better understand construction documentation (specifications, drawings and schedules), products, bidding procedures and contracts.

The focus is to emphasize the relationship that exists between specifications and drawings, and the role of the industry participants. Contract documents and the project manual have an intrinsic relationship with each other, with standard pre-printed contract documents, and with associated documents; this course explains these relationships.

Introduction

Construction Process: Players and Roles; Owner Expectations; Budget Process; Project Phases; and the Bidding Process

Production of Construction Documents: The Project Manual; Format Documents; Specifying Methods; Language and Style; Specification Writing, Editing and Co-ordination; and Document Interpretation

Forms of Contract: Contract Delivery

Codes and Standards: Codes and Code Content; Standards and Testing Agencies; Zoning By-Laws and Permits; and Environmental issues

Risk Management Issues: Risk and Liability

Legal Issues: Legal Issues; and Contract Law and Court Decisions Building Science: Basic Building Principles; Product Evaluation and Selection; Sustainability Issues; and Diagnostic Methods, Non-Destructive Testing

Contract Administration: Authority of the Contract Administrator; Time Management; Submittals, Alternatives and Substitutions; Changes in the Work; The Commissioning Process; and Performance, Termination and Dispute Resolutions

Communications: Communications and Projects on the Internet

Trends in the Construction Industry: The History of Standardizing Construction Information; New Initiatives in Standardization; and Professional Development

The CSC Vancouver chapter was planning to have a Construction Contract Administration begining this fall. However, there were not enough students registered and otheres that required the PCD pre-requisit. Based on the schedule of those that were going to register the Chapter has postponed the course until the beginning of 2016. When the dates have been confirmed I will e-mail those who have contacted me in and post the information on the website.

The CSC Vancouver chapter has reached out to a few potential instructors about teaching previous courses. If you are interested in teaching a full course or would like to help co-teach a course please contact me to discuss your interests.

Education Report - Specifier: May 2015

The Vancouver Technical Representative course that started in January of this year has recently finished at the beginning of May. The eight students that participated had recently completed their final panel presentation. The CSC congratulates those who have earned their Technical Representative designation and know they will be excellent representatives of the CSC.

It is early days but if you are interested in the Principles of Construction Documentation (PCD) course please contact me as the chapter is likely going to hold this course again in the fall and would like to have an idea of the interest level. As of now we have heard from three people that have expressed interest. PCD is the first course, and a pre-requisite, for all of the CSC education streams. These are Certified Technical Representative, Certified Construction Contract Administrator, and Certified Specification Practitioner. It is also a strong foundational course for people who are new to the construction industry or want to better understand construction documentation (specifications, drawings and schedules), products, bidding procedures and contracts. This course is offered on-line by CSC Canada once a year and the Vancouver chapter aims to hold one local class a year.

Education Report - Specifier: January 2015

The Vancouver chapter began a Principles of Construction Documentation course in September this year. It was by all measures a successful course with 16 students registered and are currently writing the final exam. Feedback from Glenn Chatten and the students I have spoken to has been extremely positive. With one of the largest group of students that have attended the PCD course in Vancouver the debate and interaction was very helpful for everyone that has attended. Many of the students registered are looking to go on to complete various CSC certified designations.

Principles of Construction Documentation is the first course, and a pre-requisite, for all of the CSC education streams. If there is enough demand the Chapter will look at offering another course.

The Technical Representative course is scheduled to begin January 19, 2015. Final details are being worked but tentatively we expect them to once again be held at the VRCA Vancouver location. The registration form has been posted on the CSC Vancouver web site, so if you are interested please submit the form back to me.

The CSC Vancouver chapter is also looking to hold the Construction Contract Administration beginning in the late Winter or early Spring. There have been a few people that have expressed interest in both classes, but not enough to hold a session. As of now we need two more people would be enough to hold the course. If you or any one you know has expressed an interest please contact me so we can work on getting a class filled and scheduled for each.

Education Report - Specifier: September 2014

The Technical Sales Representative course that was scheduled to start April 14th has been postponed due to insufficient registrations. If you are interested, or know of anyone who is please let
the CSC know so the TSR course can be re-scheduled for the fall. For this, and all the higher level CSC courses the Principles of Construction Documentation is the only pre-requisite course.

Specifier II was offered in the spring of 2013 and CSC Vancouver is in the process of determining the interest level of offering Specifier I in the Fall of 2014. There have already been a few people in Vancouver that have expressed interest but we need more people in order to make the course viable. The instructor that has taught this course in the past is unsure if they are able to teach at that time, if you are interested in teaching this course, or know someone who would be, please let us know so we can contact them.

The CSC offers three on-line courses, the Principles of Construction Documentation (PCD), Technical Representative (TR), and Specifier 1. You can look up more information regarding on-line
courses at www.csc-dcc.ca under the Education tab.

We are working on a course schedule for fall of 2014 as well. All courses are provided in Vancouver are based on the number of that are registered so please let us know which courses you are interested in and we’ll see what we can do. Tentatively these are the courses we are planning for in the next number of months.

  • April 2014 – Technical Representative
  • Fall 2014 – PCD
  • Fall 2014 – CCA
  • Spring 2015 – Specifier I

If you or your colleagues have any interest in taking these courses or volunteering, please let us know by contacting our Education Officer, Robert Jahnsen at robert@div7.ca
